National Teacher Appreciation Day
May 9, 2017
Tuesday, May 9th, is National Teacher Appreciation Day, and a very special day in the Wayne Township Public Schools.  Parents and students are very busy showing how much they appreciate our many excellent teachers.  “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased” is a well known quote that puts the work of every teacher in perspective.  Every day, teachers come to work and have a major influence on their students, although in most cases their positive influence goes unrecognized.  Today is a day to make sure the important work of teachers is recognized.  A special thanks to our teachers in the Wayne Township Public Schools for the many ways they influence students to be their best and for their commitment to the school system.

Regards,
Mark Toback, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Re-Registration for all Students in Grades 5, 8 and 10
March 24, 2017
In order to ensure that all students attending the Wayne Township Public Schools are residents of Wayne, we will once again be requiring the re-registration of students at certain grade levels.  Parents of students at three grade levels (fifth grade going into sixth grade, eighth grade going into ninth grade and tenth grade going into eleventh grade) will be required to re-register their children in the coming months at their child’s current school.

For example, if you have a child currently in eighth grade at George Washington Middle School, you should report to George Washington Middle School to re-register your child. This process has been streamlined, and it is not a full re-registration, but rather a document review that should take approximately five minutes.

The re-registration will start at the beginning of April.  All registration documents must be provided to your child’s school by the last day of school in June. Parents of currently enrolled students in grades five, eight and ten will be receiving a letter from your child’s school in the coming weeks with information about how to re-register your student.

Wayne Hills High School Football Team is in the Playoffs
November 16, 2016
On Wednesday November 9, 2016, the parents of Wayne Hills High School football team athletes filed an appeal of NJSIAA’s decision that disqualified the Wayne Hills High School football team from all 2016 tournament play (playoffs).  The Wayne Township Board of Education filed a motion to intervene and joined in the appeal on behalf of the eligible players of the Wayne Hills High School football team.   On November 10, 2016, Acting Commissioner of Education, Kimberley Harrington, stayed the NJSIAA’s decision to declare the students ineligible because the students were not afforded any due process.

On November 15, 2016, the NJSIAA held a hearing to determine whether the student athletes in question were eligible.  After hours of testimony, the NJSIAA determined that our student athletics were eligible and that Wayne Hills High School football team deserves to be in the playoffs.

“Despite the controversial process that our student athletes and school community have gone through this past week, I am especially pleased that our boys will move to the playoffs without any doubt of their eligibility to do so,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mark Toback.  “They will demonstrate their hard work on the football field, and the championship title will not be tainted by rumors or allegations of ineligibility.  I am very much looking forward to watching them on the field next weekend.  Good luck boys!”  Please click here for the official press release.

Wayne Hills High School Football Team Disqualification is Stayed by NJDOE
November 13, 2016
(WAYNE, NJ) On Wednesday November 9, 2016, parents of Wayne High School football team athletes filed an appeal of NJSIAA’s decision that disqualified the Wayne Hills High School football team from all 2016 tournament play (playoffs) based on the season-long participation of ineligible players with the New Jersey Department of Education.  The Wayne Township Board of Education filed a motion to intervene and joined in the appeal on behalf of the eligible players of the Wayne Hills High School football team.

One day later, on November 10, 2016, Acting Commissioner of Education, Kimberley Harrington, found the NJSIAA’s decision to declare the students ineligible “…was procedurally flawed, as the students were not afforded any due process.”   Further, the New Jersey Department of Education stayed the forfeiture of any wins by Wayne Hills and stayed the disqualification of the Wayne Hills football team from the 2016 Football State Championships.

“I am pleased that the New Jersey Department of Education recognized the importance of fundamental due process and notice to the impacted students,” said Superintendent of Schools, Mark Toback.  “I am ecstatic that the harsh penalty of disqualification from the playoffs has been stayed, allowing our student athletics to once again demonstrate their hard work on the football field.”    Please click here for official press release.

Wayne Hills High School Football Team Appeal
November 9, 2016
As previously reported, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (“NJSIAA”) determined that the Wayne Hills High School football team has been disqualified from all 2016 tournament play (playoffs) based on the season-long participation of ineligible players.

This morning the Superintendent, Dr. Mark Toback, held a meeting with the Wayne Hills High School football team and parents.  “I understand and share in the students and parents concerns,” said Dr. Toback after the meeting.  “Their outrage and disappointment is justified, and unfortunately, many dedicated and hard-working student athletes have lost a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

It has come to the attention of the Wayne Township Board of Education and the administration that members of the Wayne Hills High School football team will be appealing the NJSIAA ruling before Friday’s playoff game.   The Board and the administration intends on formally joining and appearing with the parents in their pursuit of a fair and equitable resolution on behalf of the eligible Wayne Hills football players.”  In addition, the Board of Education issued a letter to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association requesting that all eligible players be permitted to continue in the playoffs.  Please click here for press release.

Wayne Board of Education Issues Letter to NJSIAA
November 9, 2016
On behalf of the Wayne Township Board of Education, we write to urge the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association “NJSIAA” to reconsider its decision that the Wayne Hills High School football team be disqualified from all 2016 tournament playoffs based on the season-long participation of ineligible players.

It is our understanding that the administration reported to you concerns regarding potentially ineligible players.  The intention of the administration was to work collaboratively in addressing the concerns, so as not to impact the playoffs.   Unfortunately, that is not what occurred.   In addition, the harsh penalty does not encourage others in similar situations to self-report concerns. Please click here for complete letter.
Wayne Hills High School Football Team Disqualified
November 8, 2016
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (“NJSIAA”) is the governing body responsible for overseeing high school athletics in the State of New Jersey.   It is responsible for all education-based interscholastic athletics, which support academic achievement, good citizenship and fair and equitable opportunities. The NJSIAA conducts tournaments and crowns champions in 31 sports.

A situation was brought to the Superintendent’s attention that a few players were possibly ineligible due to suspected non-residency within Wayne Township.  The district is affirmatively obligated to directly report to the NJSIAA all potential violations of NJSIAA by-laws.  After reviewing the scenario and the appropriate documentation, the NJSIAA notified the administration that certain students on the Wayne Hills football team were deemed ineligible because they did not have a bona fide change of address.

It is with much regret, that we have been advised that the NJSIAA has determined that the Wayne Hills High School football team has been disqualified from all 2016 tournament play (playoffs) based on the season-long participation of the ineligible players. Because of these students’ ineligibility, the team is required to forfeit any games that it has won in the season.  As such, the Wayne Hills football team will not be allowed to move forward with the state playoffs.

“I understand and greatly appreciate the hard work that our boys put into the season,” said Superintendent of Schools, Mark Toback.  “I share the heartbreak this will cause our students, families, district and the Wayne Hills community.”  Please click here for press release.

Kindergarten Wrap Program
August 31, 2016
It's a Wrap!

The Wayne Township Public Schools "wrapped up" an important milestone for an exciting new program available this school year.  A parent and student orientation for the new Kindergarten Wrap Program was held on August 30th.  Shortly after a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 A.M., orientation sessions started and ran into the afternoon.  Each session was full and 115 parents were in attendance.  Parents and students alike enjoyed the opportunity to meet the teachers and learn about the program.  A highlight of the orientation was a demonstration about how technology is used to support the 21st century kindergarten classroom.  Parents especially enjoyed a chance to play and learn with their children using a Smart Table, which is an interactive display in the form of a table designed for children.  The district was able to develop the K-Wrap Program last spring in response to the expressed desire of kindergarten parents to have a placement for their children in the Wayne Township Public Schools for a complete school day.  The district developed the program after researching similar programs that exist in other local districts such as Madison and Ramsey.  At present, the program has a maximum enrollment of 160 students.

PARCC Letter from the Superintendent
August 19, 2016
August 19, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In the spring, your child participated in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests to measure his or her academic progress with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. Evaluating the results from PARCC testing can be a helpful tool in measuring your child’s success in school, and it is just one of the many ways your child’s teachers and administrators can determine whether he or she is on track to being college and career-ready. New Jersey has had statewide tests for decades, and they have served as a small, but important part of assessing our students’ annual progress.  Click here for a continuation of the Superintendent's letter with links for the English Language Arts and Math parent guides for the score reports.

Teacher Appreciation Week--A Message from the Superintendent of Schools
May 3, 2016
Every school day, the 806 teachers working in the Wayne Township Public Schools deliver over 5,000 lessons to their students.  Quietly, they deliver lessons that change lives and inspire students.  They often give students much more to think about after school besides their homework.  There are countless examples of our teachers extending themselves well after the final bell.

Today is a special day to celebrate our teachers.  On behalf of the Wayne Township Board of Education and the administration, it is my pleasure to express sincere appreciation for their excellent work and dedication.   We thank our teachers for being models of patience, honesty, wisdom, responsibility, generosity and for their commitment to lifelong learning.

Sincerely,
Mark Toback

A Message from the Superintendent Regarding Wayne Patch Article
November 10, 2015
Dear Residents,

Recently, an article by Patch Writer Tom Davis listed the Wayne Township Public Schools among school districts with the most violence, vandalism, weapons, drug use, and bullying.  The numbers used in the article were drawn from an annual New Jersey Department of Education report known as the EVVRS (Electronic Violence and Vandalism Report System). I understand how deeply disturbing an article like this might be to many of our parents and our residents.  If you examine the article in greater detail, you will realize that this is simply a case of irresponsible reporting designed to trigger a response that would lead residents to click on the Patch website. Read the full letter.

Blackboard Connect
March 5, 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Normally, our Blackboard Connect messaging system is very reliable.  This winter, we certainly put the system to the test, and it worked without fail.  Today, there was a technical problem and unfortunately, many parents did not receive a phone call about the school closing.  Even more confusing is the fact that many other people did receive phone calls.  We identified the problem and it is now fixed.  Hopefully, nothing like this will happen in the future.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  We will be running a test in the near future to verify that the problem has been fixed.

Please be reminded that, if in doubt, there are other ways to determine if the start of school is delayed or if school is closed.  The website is updated with information about delays and closings, and we also post information on Facebook.  We notify the major television stations.  The district also leaves a recording on our phone system if there is a delay or closing.

Yours truly,
Mark Toback

FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN SURVEY
December 17, 2015
As many residents are aware, a recent special question regarding full-day kindergarten for the Wayne Township Public Schools did not obtain voter approval.  In response to this outcome, the district is seeking out ways to accommodate parents while recognizing the will of the voters.  Specifically, we are researching the feasibility of creating a tuition-based "wrap-around" program, which would be full-day.  This would be a voluntary, fee-based program.  We have created a survey in order to compile feedback to assist with the design of the program.  For information, and to complete the survey, please click here.
